Oceania athletes have been encouraged to engage online to improve their visibility, interaction, mental health, and access to opportunities.
Speaking from Papua New Guinea today, the Chair of the Oceania National Olympic Committees’ (ONOC’s) Athletes’ Commission, Ms Karo Lelai called upon athletes to engage through use of the new online platform which covers the Commission’s governance, history, operations and programmes.
Ms Lelai encouraged athletes to follow the microsite online so that they could ‘access information, inspiration and practical guidelines on how to engage, access opportunities for capacity building and entrepreneurship, and personal development before, during and after life in sport.’
She said, ‘sport and physical activity are critical to COVID-19 recovery and to building-in the New Normal in every nation.’
‘This recognition will be translated into diverse and innovative opportunities for athletes, coaches, experts and administrators in our world of sport.’
In addition, she invited athletes to learn about the many ‘firsts’ the Oceania Continent ‘contributed to the larger Olympic Movement in terms of good practice, flagship products and initiatives - several of which led to transformations in sport organisation and participation.’
Ms Lelai emphasised that the microsite is the beginning of telling athletes’ stories through documentation and sharing, urging them to engage closely with their national representatives and each other as athletes.
Given the challenges of Oceania’s remoteness and isolation and the compounding reality of the COVID-19 pandemic, athletes were specifically encouraged to take care of their ‘mental health, build support networks, create friendship, nurture trust, take the qualities of fair play and camaraderie from the sporting arena’ into their homes and communities.
She also acknowledged the ONOC leadership for supporting the initiative, paying tribute to President, Dr Robin Mitchell (Fiji), Vice-President Ms Baklai Temengil (Palau), and Secretary General Mr Rick Blas (Guam)
She cited their collective vision and foresight in giving Oceania athletes an online home.
