TOKYO 2020

Athletes of Oceania were gifted a new website (microsite) by the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) in a soft launch by Secretary General Rick Blas today. This is an extension of the Olympic Day celebration a day earlier - 23 June.

Increasing online visibility for athletes

Speaking from the ONOC office in Guam, Mr Blas said, ’I am very proud to join our ONOC Athletes’ Commission Chair, Karo Lelai, in announcing the completion of the ONOC Athletes’ Commission microsite.’

‘The ONOC Athletes’ Commission microsite is given to you [athletes] as a sign of our commitment to placing athletes at the centre of the Olympic Movement in Oceania.’

Linking to IOC Agenda 2020+5

He added that the microsite is a tangible product aligned to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC’s) strategic document, Agenda 2020+5, which thrusts the IOC and the Olympic Movement into rapid digitalisation over the current Quadrennium 2021 - 2024. This is an effort to increase the visibility of athletes as the primary stakeholder in the Olympic Movement and beyond.

For background, IOC’s Agenda 2020+5 is a strategy that contributes to placing athletes at the heart of the Olympic Movement through visibility, opportunities, education, training, and into pathways for post-sport career or entrepreneurship.

Continuing ONOC support to NOCs and athletes

Mr Blas said that ONOC are, ‘already in the process of increasing and strengthening support to National Olympic Committees (NOCs) through development of NOC websites and one for the only sub-regional games in Oceania - the Micronesian Games which will take place in Majuro in 2022.’

He added that, ‘ONOC is providing full support to NOCs in conducting Social Media Audits to support the visibility and driving of engagement of new NOC websites which will begin to rollout in the coming months.’

Mr Blas reiterated that ONOC as a ‘Continental Association has led innovation in communications within the Olympic Movement given Oceania’s geographical remoteness, isolation and challenges of facilities and participation.’

He stated that the ONOC Athletes’ Commission microsite will feature Oceania athletes at the Tokyo Summer Olympics next month. Going forward, it will roll out a regular coverage of sport in and from Oceania, including Oceania athletes participating in the international arena.

Mr Blas paid tribute to Ms Karo Lelai, the Chair of the ONOC Athletes’ Commission for her work in bringing the microsite to life and encouraged all NOCs, NOC Athletes’ Commissions, sport federations, and athletes to engage on the new platform.
