Team Fiji’s Chef de Mission to Tokyo 2020 Patrick Bower says like every other country, Fiji also faces difficulties preparing their athletes over this period.
“However, our Fiji managers and coaches have used every possible means to improvise whilst remaining positive throughout,” Bower added.
“Of the eight selected sports given the opportunity to prepare for the Tokyo Olympics, only two teams have secured the privilege to confirm their places,” Bower said.
Bower says confirmed for now are the Rugby Men’s and Women’s sevens teams.
“Swimming has been awarded two Universality places whilst Athletics one,” Bower said.
He said the other remaining sports are Archery, Judo, Karate and Table Tennis.
“All these remaining sports are yet to name their athlete or athletes,” Bower explained.
“The only athlete that has had the privilege during this difficult time to receive coaching overseas is Tevita Takayawa from Judo; this, he is receiving in Japan.
“All athletes and officials have received their initial bout of thorough medical tests and all have proved to be on track,” Bower explained.
He said strict monitoring in regards to COVID-19 continues for all management and coaches anticipating to go to the Games.
