In a powerful and heartfelt speech that blended tradition, values, and vision, President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. officially opened the 12th Pacific Mini Games in Palau before a packed stadium of athletes, officials, and guests from across Oceania.
Koror, Palau - With 2000 athletes and team officials, and supporters from 23 Pacific nations, President Whipps described the Games as the largest gathering in Palau’s history and a "beacon of unity, hope, and the unbreakable Pacific spirit."
“We gather here not only to compete, but to celebrate what binds us: our ocean, our culture, and our dreams,” he declared, welcoming the diverse voices of the Pacific in traditional greetings that echoed across the stadium.
President Whipps paid tribute to the immense efforts of the local Organizing Committee, led by Dr. Patrick Tellei, ONOC President and Palau Secretary General Baklai Temengil, and PNOC President Frank Kyota. He praised the people of Palau for embracing the Games across all 16 states, saying, “From Koror to Airai, Melekeok to Ngiwal, this is truly a whole-of-Palau effort.”
He extended deep gratitude to Palau’s international partners, acknowledging the vital infrastructure and logistical support from Taiwan, Japan, the United States, and Australia — from upgraded sports venues and school facilities to energy improvements and broadcast support. “Together, you have helped us light the way,” he said.
In a message to the athletes, President Whipps emphasized the role of sport in shaping character, health, and community. He called on athletes to compete with honor and uphold a Games environment free of tobacco, drugs, and alcohol. “Through sport, we become our best selves,” he affirmed.
He shared the legend of a two-headed eel from Airai, a metaphor for unity and cooperation, and recounted the inspiring story of New Zealand weightlifter David Liti, who lifted a fellow competitor onto the podium — a symbol of true sportsmanship that captured the essence of these Games.
President Whipps ended with a call to shine together, echoing the biblical verse, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds…” and urged all present to lift each other higher and “rise together after every fall.”
“Let these Games be a shining example of what we can achieve when we stand together,” he said before officially declaring the 12th Pacific Mini Games open.
