On 08 August, our Pacific athletes continued to demonstrate their resilience and dedication in a variety of events at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
In the Women's Canoe Single 200m event, Guam’s Raina Taitingfong secured 7th place in her heat with a time of 1:05.90, advancing to the quarterfinals. Despite her best efforts, she finished 7th again in the quarterfinals, clocking in at 1:07.17.
In Taekwondo, Papua New Guinea’s Kevin Kassman faced a tough competitor in Bradly Sinden of Great Britain during the Men's -68kg Round of 16. Kassman put up a valiant fight but was defeated 0-2, by the World Number 2, Sinden.
Mathlynn Sasser from the Marshall Islands competed in the Women's 59kg Weightlifting event, finishing 10th overall with a total lift of 209kg. This marks Sasser’s second Olympic appearance, following her debut at Rio 2016, solidifying her status as a regional powerhouse in weightlifting.
In Women's Freestyle Wrestling 57kg, Rckaela Aquino of Guam took on Brazil’s Giullia Penalber in the 1/8 Final. Despite a determined effort, Aquino was defeated 0-2, with Penalber winning by VFA. Rckaela, a two-time Olympian, is sharing this Olympic journey with her older sister Mia, who also competed in wrestling at Paris 2024.
