Pacific NOCs at the Olympics – 02 August

Our Pacific NOCs were in action across Athletics, Judo, and Sailing on 02 August. The day was filled with notable performances, personal bests, and mostly importantly – displays of true Oceania resilience.

Athletics (ATH):

In the Women's 100m Preliminary Rounds, Sydney Francisco from Palau finished her heat with a time of 13.15, while Filomenaleonisa Iakopo from American Samoa set a new Personal Best and National Record, completing her heat in 12.78 seconds. Guam's Regine Tugade-Watson finished fourth in her heat with a time of 12.02, advancing to the next round. Papua New Guinea's Leonie Beu achieved a Personal Best of 11.63, placing third in her heat. Vanuatu's Chloe David also recorded a Personal Best, finishing in 12.44 seconds. Sharon Firisua from the Solomon Islands and Temalini Manatoa from Tuvalu both achieved PBs as well, with times of 14.31 and 14.04, respectively.

In the subsequent rounds, Leonie Beu of Papua New Guinea finished with a time of 11.73, while Regine Tugade-Watson of Guam clocked in at 11.87. Both athletes showcased remarkable effort and progression through their heats.

Judo (JUD):

Team Fiji’s Gerard Takayawa faced a tough match in the Men's +100 kg Preliminary Rounds against Marius Fizel of Slovakia. Despite a strong effort, Gerard was defeated by Waza-ari with a Kuzure-kesa-gatame. Gerard’s determination and skill were evident throughout the match, holding his ground commendably.

Sailing (SAL):

Sailing saw spirited performances from our Pacific athletes. In the Women's Dinghy races, Fiji's Sophia Morgan completed three races with a net score of 48, placing 33rd out of 43. Samoa's Vaimooia Ripley finished with a net score of 83, placing 42nd. For the Men's Dinghy races, Fiji's Viliame Ratului and Samoa's Eroni Leilua both displayed perseverance, each finishing with a net score of 125, placing 42nd and 43rd, respectively, after four races.

Our athletes continue to represent the Pacific with pride, determination, and resilience. Each performance, personal best, and record set today reflects the hard work and dedication of our Oceania warriors. We look forward to more achievements and inspiring moments in the coming days.
