In a moment filled with regional pride and sporting spirit, Mr. Vidhya Lakhan, President of the Pacific Games Council (PGC), delivered his opening address to officially welcome athletes, officials, and dignitaries to the 2025 Palau Pacific Mini Games, the largest Mini Games ever held in the region.
Koror, Palau - Speaking before a packed crowd at the same arena where Palau hosted the Games in 2005, Mr. Lakhan extended a warm "Palauan welcome" to all delegations from across the Pacific. He acknowledged the presence of regional leaders, including:
H.E. President Surangel Whipps of Palau and his Cabinet,
Presidents and Prime Ministers from Pacific nations,
ONOC President Baklai Temengil and Executive Board,
ANOC President Dr. Robin Mitchell,
PGAs of the Pacific Games Council,
Oceania Sports Federations and technical officials,
Members of the media and supporters of Pacific sport.
Mr. Lakhan expressed a sense of nostalgia and gratitude as he reflected on being part of another Games Opening in Palau—20 years after the 2005 edition. He gave special recognition to Dr. Patrick Tellei, Chairman of both the 2005 and 2025 Pacific Mini Games, congratulating him and wishing the organizing committee well.
“These 2025 Games are the biggest in our history,” Lakhan announced. “Final numbers show just under 2,000 athletes and officials here in Palau.”
He commended the Palau Games Village and highlighted the strong demand for services such as catering and transport, appealing to all participants for patience and cooperation throughout the 10-day event.
The PGC President also reminded delegations to embrace Palauan hospitality and, in turn, show respect for the host nation’s culture and customs.
“Let us be good ambassadors for our sports and our countries,” he said. “While conflict continues in some parts of the world, we are fortunate to gather in peace to celebrate unity through sport.”
Mr. Lakhan closed his remarks by wishing all participants a safe and successful Games, reinforcing the values of solidarity, friendship, and excellence that define the Pacific sporting community.
