The Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) proudly presented the ONOC Legacy Recognition Award to John Coates AC in honour of his exceptional service, unwavering dedication, and transformative impact on the Olympic Movement throughout Oceania.

GUAM - The award was conferred during the ONOC President’s Dinner at the Tasi Ballroom, Hotel Nikko Guam, marking the conclusion of the 45th ONOC Annual General Assembly.

Delivering the official citation, ONOC Secretary General Mr Ricardo Blas paid tribute to Mr Coates’ longstanding leadership and vision:

“John Coates has been a cornerstone of Olympic progress across Oceania. As a Vice-President of the International Olympic Committee and President of the Australian Olympic Committee for over three decades, his contributions have extended far beyond national borders. His leadership has shaped the future of sport in our region.”

Mr Coates’ role in securing the Sydney 2000 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games was highlighted as a defining legacy that elevated Australia’s and the Pacific’s profile on the global sporting stage.

“His vision was instrumental in bringing the Olympic Games to our shores — not once, but twice,” said Mr Blas. “These landmark events not only showcased sporting excellence, but also strengthened regional cooperation, infrastructure, and pride.”

Beyond global events, Mr Coates’ enduring support for capacity-building and education has left a lasting mark. His advocacy for programmes such as the Oceania Sports Education Programme (OSEP) has empowered athletes, coaches, and sports administrators across the Pacific.

“John Coates has always championed the development of athletes and the people who support them,” Mr Blas continued. “His belief in the power of sport to uplift communities has had an immeasurable impact.”

In bestowing the ONOC Legacy Recognition Award, ONOC honours not only a remarkable sports administrator, but a visionary leader whose work has profoundly shaped the sporting identity and opportunity landscape of the Oceania region.
