This is the competition results wrap from TOKYO 2020 for Wednesday, 04 August 2021.
Almost 800 athletes from Oceania are in Tokyo for the XXXII Olympiad. These include 100 athletes from 15 Pacific island countries and the balance from Australia and New Zealand. Men and women competitors in the three distances (200m,500m and 1,000m) canoe sprints completed their quarter final rounds today before semi-finals tomorrow, Thursday 05 at the Sea Forest Waterway in the Tokyo Bay Area. Three competitors from Cook Islands and Samoa took to the waterway today for their quarter final races.
In the men’s single kayak 200m first quarter final, Cook Islands Kohl Horton did not finish the race after strong show in the heats. Rudolf Williams of Samoa finished 5th in the second quarter final race, finishing strong with a time of 41.950s. In the same race, Great Britain’s Liam Heath recorded an Olympic Best time of 33.955s to qualify for tomorrow’s semi-final. The third Pacific canoeist from Samoa, Tuva’a Clifton was placed 4th in the final quarter final race with a strong time of 38.387s. Only the 1st and 2nd place getters continue into the semi-finals while the rest are eliminated from the competition.
The only men’s team progressing into Final B tomorrow is the Samoan duo of Rudolf Williams and Tuva’a Clifton who are competing in the men’s kayak double 1000m race. After the quarter finals today – only the top three teams make it to the two semi-final rounds while the bottom teams will go into Final B on Thursday at 12.47pm Japan Time. Samoa will be competing against men’s double teams from Canada, Russia and France.
In the women’s single kayak 500m, Anne Cairns of Samoa was up against the world’s best female canoeist and defending champion, Lisa Carrington of New Zealand in heat 6 of the competition. Cairns finished the 500m sprint in a time of 2:03.667m while Carrington finished first with a time of 1:48.463m. In the quarter finals this afternoon, Cairns came fourth but improved on her finish time of 2:02.525 from the heats. She did not progress into the semi-finals and was eliminated from the competition.
The canoe sprint competition at the Olympics in Tokyo takes place over six days, from 2-7 August 2021.
