Sailing

The postponed men’s two-person dinghy race where the American Samoa duo Adrian Hoesch and Tyler Paige were supposed to compete in on Monday was rescheduled after midday today. Paige and Hoesch completed 10 races in an average time of 49.32m covering a distance of 8,920m at an average speed of 5.8 knots, according to the summary of their 10 races. During races, boats navigate a course shaped like an enormous triangle, heading for the finish line after they contend with the wind from all three directions. They must pass marker buoys a certain number of times and in a predetermined order. In the Men's 470 – Two Person Dinghy class, two-person crews sail boats measuring 4.7 metres in length. Australia, the USA and Great Britain have generally divided the gold medals among themselves whereas in the Women's 470 – Two Person Dinghy, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain and Netherlands have vied for gold at the last three Games. Sailing is not only a race against other boats but a battle with nature: the height of the waves, the pull of the tides, the strength of the wind and other climatic factors. The American Samoa duo were placed 18 out of 19 competitors.

Weightlifting

American Samoa champion weightlifter, Tanumafili Jungblut was the only competitor from Oceania in the men’s 109kg Group B weightlifting competition at the Tokyo International Forum this afternoon. He recorded a 150kg snatch after one failed attempt of 155kg. In the clean and jerk, the American Samoa recorded 180kg after two failed attempts at 190kg – and that gave him a total lift of 330kg. This lift is lower than his Pacific Games record in Samoa in 2019 where his snatch and clean and jerk record was 336kg.
