Canoe Sprint (Men) – 1000m single kayak

Samoa’s Clifton Tuva’a and Kohl Horton of Cook Islands also competed in the same event – the men’s 1000m single kayak at the Sea Forest Water Way today. Tuva’a was fifth in heat 4 with a time of 4.11.029s but slowed down slightly in the quarter-finals with a time of 4.21.301s at fifth place. Horton on the other hand was placed 6th in the first heat with a time of 4.24.6 679s and a quarter-final time of 4.39.138s. Only the first and second place rowers move into the semi-final rounds.

The canoe competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are being held at a specially built waterway located between two man-made islands at the mouth of the Sumida River in Tokyo Bay. The islands were constructed using landfill and buried trash. Uminomori (Sea Forest) island on the northern side of the course has since been converted to a green space with trees planted over the waste. The island to the south of the course is still being used to collect and dump waste. After the games have moved on, organisers say the facility will become a centre of rowing and canoeing in Asia.

Weightlifting

20-year-old Tongan weightlifter, Kuinini Manumua competed in Group A of the women’s 87kg category Monday night at the Tokyo International Forum – against some of the world’s top women lifters including new Olympic and World record holder and eventual gold medal winner, Wenwen Li of China. Manumua managed a snatch of 103kg and clean and jerked 125kg, which gave a total lift 228kg, seven places down from the winner Li. Li picked a snatch of 140kg and clean and jerk of 180kg – both recorded as new Olympic record. Silver went to Emily Campbell of Britain with a total lift of 283kg and bronze to American lifter Sarah Robles, with a total lift of 282kg. One of the most awaited lift of the night was New Zealand’s Laurel Hubbard, who made history when she competed in weight lifting competition as the first openly transgender woman to participate in the Olympics. Hubbard, 43, was one of 10 competitors in the heavyweight division and had an outside chance at a medal. But she failed to complete any of her three lifts in the first half of the programme, eliminating her from medal contention. After her third miss, she pounded her heart, lifted her hands in thanks, took a bow and left the stage and did not complete the clean and jerk lift.
