Papua New Guinea’s last athlete to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics was in action Sunday for the Women’s Long Jump at the Olympic Stadium. 28-year old Rellie Kaputin’s third and final jump of 6.40m was short of getting her through to the final round of 12 best jumpers. Overall she’s finished 19th out of 30 athletes qualified to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She has been based in Australia in the lead up to the Olympic Games with her coach Philip Newton.

In women’s shot put, New Zealand’s Dame Valerie Adams became the first woman to win medals at four Olympics in a single field event after claiming bronze here in Tokyo. The 36-year-old was the Olympic champion in 2008 and 2012 and won silver in Rio in 2016. China's Gong Lijiao won gold and the USA's Raven Saunders picked up silver. Dame Valerie’s bronze throw of 19.62m capped a remarkable return to the top level of her sport following the birth of her son in 2019. “I just hope to continue to inspire female athletes all around the world. If you want to have a kid and you want to come back and be at the top of the world, you can - you can absolutely do that, she told the BBC. In 2017 she was knighted Dame Valerie Adams to honour and celebrate her services to athletics. At her investiture, she said that she hoped her recognition would open doors and inspire many Pacific peoples to pursue their dreams and get rewarded for it.
