Solomon Islands marathon runner, Sharon Firisua was one of only 73 athletes that successfully completed the 42.195km race at Sapporo Odori Park this morning. Firisua completed the race in just over three hours and two minutes in sweltering conditions that saw 14 athletes failing to complete the distance. She set a new national record for Solomon Islands in the marathon run. Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir took gold in a time of 2:27.20 setting a seasonal best. Silver went to another Kenyan marathon runner, Brigid Kosgei with a time 2:27.36 and bronze to American, Molly Siedel with a time of 2:27.46. The race was moved to the northern city of Sapporo because of the expected high temperature in Tokyo today. In the event, runners tackle a three-loop race route after running two laps around the park.
