The Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) has finalised the dates for the Melanesian Sub-Regional Athletes’ Forum to be held in Fiji.

The three-day forum will be held from 26 to 28 April, as ONOC continues to build momentum on empowering Athletes’ Commission (AC) representatives in Oceania to execute their roles of being able to properly represent the interests of athletes in their respective countries.

The Melanesian Sub-Regional Athletes’ Forum comes two months after the Micronesian Sub-Regional Athletes’ Forum, which was held in Guam from 12 to 17 March.

Ricardo Blas, Secretary General of ONOC, said, "After the success of the Micronesian Sub-Regional Athletes’ Forum in Guam, we are now shifting our focus to the Melanesian sub-region with similar objectives of assisting Athletes’ Commissions in the sub-region."

Representatives from Fiji (FIJ), Papua New Guinea (PNG), Solomon Islands (SOL), Tuvalu (TUV) and Vanuatu (VAN) will be part of the forum, which will discuss issues and concerns faced by the ACs, discover funding opportunities available, and workshop key topics of athlete safeguarding and sport integrity.

"Athletes’ Commissions in our Melanesian countries have representatives with different levels of experiences and exposure,” Blas added.

"The Melanesian Sub-Regional Athletes’ Forum will work as a perfect induction for our newest AC representatives as well as a refresher for our seasoned AC representatives as we look at fostering collaboration amongst our Athletes’ Commissions."

Similar to the Micronesian Sub-Regional Athletes’ Forum, this will also be the first time a Melanesian Sub-Regional Athletes’ Forum is being held.

"The objective for having these forums in different sub-regions is to ensure the sharing of experiences from all our countries in different sub-regions to make way for the louder voices of the athletes.

"With most of our countries in Oceania being small in size and spread across a large ocean, each different sub-region faces its own unique set of challenges and concerns."

"Each different sub-region in Oceania has its own unique set of challenges and concerns, as most countries are small in size, and spread across a large ocean."

The Melanesian Sub-Regional Athletes’ Forum will be held at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, Fiji.
