A very emotional Maria said she truly wanted to make everyone proud, but despite the outcome, she is extremely proud to be at the Olympic Games.

Maria Escano represents Guam in Judo.

Coming straight off the mat, Escano thanked her coach - who has been a pillar of support in every way, her parents, and everyone who has supported her journey so far.

Coming from a small nation like Guam, Escano trains as part of an elite club, dedicating over 30 hours a week.

She describes the preparation for the Olympics as a full-time job and believes that anyone who sacrifices and puts in this amount of work deserves to be there.

Describing her Paris 2024 Olympics experience, she said, “It feels weird to be at the Olympics; it’s like an odd feeling.

“I feel like I'm in a whole new world,” she said.

When asked what happens next, she said, “Maybe a lot of rest.”

Escano was defeated by her good friend, Mariana Esteves from Team Guinea, Esteves won by Ippon through Hadaka-jime, with a final score of 0-10.
