Running in the same event as a former Olympic medalist was a highlight for Papua New Guinea’s Leonie Beu.

Beu was in the lane next to Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, a two-time Olympic bronze medalist, in the Women's 100m Round One.

The 25-year-old clocked a personal best time of 11.63 seconds in the Women’s 100m Preliminary Round, qualifying her for the next round.

She then ran a time of 11.73 seconds to finish eighth in Heat 5 of the Women's 100m Round One at Stade de France.

“I knew literally everyone was going to run faster in the rounds.

“It was beautiful running with them, I enjoyed it; that will be a story I can tell people that I have run with them,” she said.

Beu admitted that she was not pressured but rather happy running with other well-known sprinters.

“There were so many people; I loved the atmosphere.”

After a long season at college, Beu was grateful that her much-anticipated season was over.

“Honestly, coming to the Olympics was not one of my goals for 2024, because this was going to be my last season for college and my goal was just to get the season done with whatever I have,” she said.

“I was not happy with my last outing at the Conference – I did not run the time I wanted, so I took that as motivation to work more at the Oceania Championships, and then I was able to perform well both in the 100m and 200m.”

She acknowledged the support of her college coaches, who helped her focus on her sprints; she usually runs the 200m and 400m.

“I was just telling myself that I’m not here because of me, I’m here for PNG, the Pacific, and all the islands. It’s not about me but everyone out there.”

Beu attends Middle Tennessee State University in the USA.
