Erati outperformed competitors from Italy, Bulgaria, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia, who did not complete their lifts.
As Kiribati’s male flagbearer for the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Games, Erati finished with a total of 220 in his Olympic debut at South Paris Arena 6, with 100kg in the Snatch and 120kg in the clean and Jerk.
A three-time bronze medalist at the Oceania Championships and Pacific Games, Erati hopes his Olympic journey will inspire more athletes from Kiribati to pursue weightlifting.
"I was a bit nervous when I saw the crowd, but my coach reminded me to focus.”
"It feels good to be here representing our small island.
“I hope young kids back home will follow in our footsteps,” he said.
Earlier this year, Erati ranked 18th in the Men's 67kg event at the International Weightlifting Federation 2023 World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he finished with a total of 210.
