TOKYO, 25 JULY 2021 (PACNEWS) --- Two Pacific weightlifters took to the stand at the Tokyo International Forum Sunday in the 61kg and 67kg categories.
Kiribati’s gold medal hopeful Ruben Katoatau lifted a total of 245kg – snatching 105 kg and clean and jerked 145kg – earning him fourth place in the Group B competition. Group A competition was underway Sunday night to determine the top medal placings.
Papua New Guinea’s Morea Baru was placed 10th in Group B of the 61kg category – lifting a total of 265kg – snatching 118kg and clean and jerked 147kg.
In the 61kg category, China’s Li Fabian snatched gold in an Olympic Record clean and jerk of 172kg and a snatch of 142kg, recording an Olympic Record lift of 313kg.
In the Olympics, the two weightlifting competition lifts are the snatch and the clean and jerk. The snatch is a wide-grip, one-move lift. The clean and jerk is a close-grip, two-move lift. Each weightlifter receives three attempts in each, and the combined total of the highest two successful lifts determines the overall result within a bodyweight category.
In sailing two women competitors from Fiji and Papua New Guinea took to the water Sunday morning. Fiji’s Sophie Morgan was placed 43rd in the event followed by Papua New Guinea sailor Rose Lee Numa, in 44th place. Both women were competing in the women’s single dinghy laser radial race
