In a historic and heartfelt moment at the 45th Annual General Assembly of the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC), held at the Hotel Nikko in Guam, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Dr. Thomas Bach delivered his final address to the region in his official capacity as IOC President.

GUAM - In a room filled with leaders from across Oceania, President Bach extended his warmest greetings and expressed deep appreciation for the region’s enduring commitment to Olympic values.

He reflected on his many visits to the Pacific, calling them personal highlights of his presidency and praising the region’s community spirit, passion for sport, and embodiment of Olympism.

“Each visit to Oceania has inspired me. The joy of effort, the strong sense of community, and the shared respect for universal values are deeply felt in every corner of this region,” said Dr. Bach.

President Bach commended ONOC and its members for their recent initiatives, including the Olympic Solidarity Finance Workshop, the NOC Forums, and the ONOC Strategic Planning Meeting, recognising them as meaningful contributions to both local communities and the broader Olympic Movement.

A highlight of his address was a tribute to ONOC President Dr. Robin Mitchell, whose decades of leadership have shaped the Olympic Movement in the Pacific.

“Dr. Mitchell is a true embodiment of the Olympic spirit. His visionary leadership and tireless dedication have transformed sport across Oceania,” Bach remarked.

In recognition of Dr. Mitchell’s exceptional service, Dr. Bach presented him with the IOC President’s Trophy, titled “The Sky is the Limit.”

The award symbolises Dr. Mitchell’s far-reaching vision, deep commitment, and transformative impact.

Looking ahead, President Bach acknowledged the nearing conclusion of his IOC presidency, set for June 2025. He encouraged ONOC members to extend the same spirit of unity and cooperation to his successor, IOC President-elect Mrs. Kirsty Coventry, noting her leadership of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games and her strong connections to the region.

“As I prepare to conclude this chapter, I carry with me the warmth, friendship, and strength of Oceania. I urge you to support President-elect Coventry as you have supported me.”

President Bach’s remarks concluded with a standing ovation, as delegates expressed their sincere gratitude for his leadership and support of the Olympic Movement in the Pacific.
