Fijiana captain Rusila Nagasau says her teammates yearn to bring rugby sevens gold medals back to the families they have not seen for over five months.

TOKYO, 31 JULY 2021 (IOS) – The Fijian men's and women's squads for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 were locked down to train in capital city Suva earlier in the year as Covid-19 cases swept through the archipelago.

The men have already retained their Olympic title, and the women stunned champions Australia on Friday to book a semi-final date with World Series winners New Zealand.

“Our thoughts are back at home for our families, not saying goodbye to them, training for five months and not even seeing them," Nagasau said.

"Our main aim is to go back home and meet them and give them the gold medal."

The 14-12 defeat left Australia devastated, with the team leaving the field distraught.

For playmaker Charlotte Caslick, the soaring high of the 2016 Games sat in stark contrast to this crushing low.

"I can’t even remember what I felt like in the tunnel at Rio, but I really know I’m going to remember that," Caslick said.

Great Britain delivered their best performance of the tournament in a thunderstorm-disrupted session to dispatch United States of America.

Their 21-12 victory was built on stout defence against a larger and power-laden USA side.

"We’ve got some of the smallest girls, we’re not a big team," Alex Matthews said.

"Defence wins you the game and makes it easier once you’ve got the ball.”

Great Britain will meet France, comfortable winners against a dangerous China team, in Saturday's semi-finals.

New Zealand remain heavy tournament favourites after hammering Russia for the second time in just a few hours. Their clash with ever-improving Fiji is a thrilling prospect.

In the ninth-12th-place ranking playoffs, Canada thrashed Brazil and Kenya edged Japan at the death.
