USD$1.8m Games investment for Olympic Committees in the region, ONOC SG Blas informs the Pacific Games Council Meeting in Honiara

Oceania National Olympic Committees Secretary General says the ONOC Financial Support for their members has been through the Olympic Solidarity Programme Grants for Games Initiatives.

He said ONOC is undertaking a total of 24 Activations in Honiara as part of its Games Support Programme for the Sol 2023 XVII Pacific Games.

“The activations are categorized into 5 functional areas - that are (a) Financial (b) Capacity Building (c) Medical (d) Athlete Outreach - VOA and (e) Communications and Technology,” Blas mentioned.
“The Capacity Building Programme has been through our education programme OSEP - for NOCSI and our NOC membership.

“The Medical Programme - is an extensive one - through our Medical Commission in support of the Games Organising Committee’s  Medical Programme, through training, procurement, the set-up of the Games Polyclinic and coordination of a team of volunteer physiotherapists from Japan.  

“The Athlete Outreach initiative is through our ONOC Athletes’ Commission’s VOA programme in collaboration with the IOC’s Athlete 365 Programme.

He added the Communications and Technology Programme includes (1) a Games Campaign heading into Paris 2024, (2) Oceania Olympic Lens Photo Project, (3) Transfer of the Games Results to OSIC and (4) the Broadcast of the world feed on the Olympic Channel.

Mr Blas acknowledged  the various stakeholders and partners ONOC has engaged to deliver our ONOC Games Support Programme.

“All our 24 activations are aligned to the 4 Core Functions in the ONOC Strategic Plan,” he added.
“My team, through our Games Support Tool Kit have determined “Key Performance Indicators” which they will use a baseline,  when measuring the impact and the “return on this financial investment,” Blas mentioned.

Games Polyclinic

“The Games Polyclinic activation demonstrated the legacy of the 2019 Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa Mr Blas added.  

“ONOC facilitated a requested from the NOCSI Medical Commission and the GOC Medical team to conceptualize, structure and deliver the Games Medical Programme for the Games Organising Committee.

“The overarching approach has been to build the capacity of local counterparts and I am pleased to see that this has been working really well, after my visit to the Polyclinic last week,” Blas added.

“The Coordination Centre continues to track, 24 Hours, all medical entries, and responses.

“Through training and the procurement of defiblirators,  the team were able to respond to a cardiac case last Friday.

“The clinic says, had it not been for the defiblirators, the gentleman would not have made it,” Blas added.  

He acknowledged the local medical counterparts who have worked tirelessly with Dr Belladonna Potoi and Cathy Wong from the ONOC Medical Commission, the NOCSI Medical Commission, and the support of Lemeki Lenoa and his “Volunteer First Responders” team.

“As a result of this exercise, Dr Potoi and Lemeki will work closely with ONOC to prepare a Games Medical Programme Tool Kit which can be passed onto future hosts of the Games,” Blas mentioned,

Olympic Channel broadcasts the Solomon Games

Blas mentioned that for the second time now ONOC is partnering with the Olympic Channel to broadcast the World Feed of the Solomon Games.  

He acknowledged the support from the Games Organising Committee, the Host Broadcast Team, and the Pacific Games Council to allow ONOC to transmit and share the Games globally.
